We all know that in the fashion world, trends come and go, then come and go again and then come and go again one more time.

Trends repeat so often that we begin to get a good idea of what’s going to be worn in the fall, winter, spring and summer each year. We begin to see patterns and certain pieces, colors or styles get associated to one season or another, like sandals being worn in the summer.

And while some of these things happen simply for practicality reasons (because honestly who would wear a pair of sandals in the winter when it’s 20 degrees outside?), trends don’t always work that way.

Oftentimes, in fact probably every season, certain trends emerge that have people scratching their heads saying “I thought you could only wear that in [insert different season here]?”

This fall is no different with its own set of trends that you wouldn’t necessarily pair with the fall season, but actually look super chic.

Check out the unexpected fall trends you should try now.

Mint Green

Typically we associate pastel colors with the spring. Pastels are light, girly and pretty which somehow just fits with the beautiful weather we see in the spring. So how, then, do pastels fit into the fall?

The weather is getting cold, it’s usually cloudy and there’s always that dread in the back of our minds of the impending winter. That doesn’t exactly sound like the time to bust out the light cheery colors.

Mint green being a traditionally spring color isn’t the only thing making it a surprise for the fall, though. Mint green had its big break around the spring of 2012, and trends typically don’t last more than a couple seasons.

But, lo and behold, mint green is popular this summer. You can find it in necklaces, jackets, skirts, nail polish, you name it. It seems designers just don’t want to give up on this spring color!

Miniskirt

The only reason miniskirts aren’t typically associated with the fall is simply because of the cold weather. A miniskirt doesn’t quite provide you with a ton of fabric to keep you warm in the colder temperatures that fall offers, but don’t let that deter you.

This fall, try out one of these short skirts for a chic look. You’ll be looking so hot, you’ll forget about the cold outside.

To keep your look from becoming too summery, try out a miniskirt in some classic fall fabrics like tweed or wool. These warmer fabrics will look not only season appropriate, but they’ll also give you a bit of added warmth.

Also keep your miniskirt look appropriate for the fall by pairing it with a chunky sweater or some tights. Regardless of how you wear your miniskirt this fall, though, you won’t regret it.

Strappy Shoes

Strappy shoes are another item typically associated with the warmer seasons simply for practicality reasons, but be a risk-taker this fall and try out a pair!

Strappy shoes were popular this entire year so far and it seems that fashionistas just don’t want to give it up. So instead of putting away your favorite pair from the spring and summer, keep them out and wear them well into this fall season.

Strappy shoes instantly add a touch of sexiness to any outfit you wear them with, but they really can be worn for any occasion. Wear them bare for date night or pair them with tights for a slightly more innocent and reserved look that’s appropriate for the office.

Their versatility will have you happy these shoes are sticking around for an extra season!

Cherry Red

When we see red in the fall, we’re used to darker, more subdued shades of it. We see burgundy, Bordeaux and oxblood which go so well with all of the neutrals we see in the fall. That is why it is so shocking that cherry red is taking center stage this fall season.

Don’t be afraid of this pop of color, though. Even though this cherry red is a bold color, the great thing about it is that it’s easy to wear. Start small and try out a cherry red lipstick.

If you’re feeling brave, though, try finding a cherry red coat. You’ll turn lots of heads in a good way with the bright and bold color.

Trends might come and go all the time in the fashion world, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared for some surprises every once and a while. Sometimes the fashion world throws us for a loop and we see some unexpected trends for any given season.

This fall was no different. These unexpected trends may have you a bit confused, but don’t be afraid to try them and give your fall look a fun update.
