5 Summer Positions Students Interested in the Entertainment Industry Look For

By Alexandra Brown on May 20, 2015

Since the semester is coming to a close, or maybe has already ended, college students’ search for a summer job or internship is well on the way.

A popular industry college students have been notorious for having an interest in is the entertainment industry.

College students love music, fun, and live action events, so an internship or summer job where they would get to undergo firsthand experience with this kind of atmosphere is ideal.

Here is a list of possible summer jobs or internships in the entertainment industry in which college students could potentially partake.

1. Part-time DJ

College students obviously love music, so what better position to have for the summer than being a part-time DJ?

This could mean serving as a part-time DJ for a popular or local radio station, or maybe interning at a radio station to learn about that part of the industry.

This could also mean being a part-time or even full-time DJ at a popular or local bar or club nearby, or even at one of these venues on a college campus; any college student knows how essential it is to have a skillful DJ choosing the music that is played at their favorite campus bar spot.

2. Recording Studio Intern

If the specific student was interested in music production, an ideal summer position to have would be an intern at a recording studio.

Obviously, the amount of recording studios present is geographically specific, so if the student does not necessarily live in or near a city with studios, this would require a commute, or possibly living in a different city for the summer, which would make for a great experience in itself.

Interning at a music studio would allow for the student to gain firsthand experience in the exact location in which music is produced, along with everything that goes into making that happen, including materials and equipment necessary, the various employees that are needed, costs and figures, and advertising.

3. Entertainment Magazine Intern

Being involved at a magazine that focuses on entertainment news would also be a perfect summer job to have for a college student looking to get a closer look at various aspects of the entertainment industry.

The magazine could be a local form of media focusing on local talent and music; it could be an online source, or even something a lot bigger, like Rolling Stone.

Working at a magazine like this could offer many different positions, depending on what the student is interested in. If they’re majoring in journalism, for example, their interning experience could include writing articles, blogging, or editing various sections of the magazine.

If they’re a marketing student, their position could involve working on branding for the magazine or company. Regardless of the position, the student would be gaining knowledge into what the entertainment industry is all about.

4. Television Studio Assistant/Intern

Another position ideal for a college student interested in the entertainment industry is intern or assistant at a television studio. This could either be a local studio, or one in a city nearby.

This position would also be beneficial for a student studying broadcast journalism, as they would get to learn about all that goes into producing a news show, interviews, and the kind of atmosphere this part of the industry entails.

Even if the student is simply getting coffee, doing errands or lunch runs as an intern or assistant to a higher-up in the company, they are still able to be present in the hectic atmosphere that is broadcast news.

5. Music Festival Intern

This is another position within the entertainment industry that would require a student to be in a geographic location where certain music festivals occur. In other words, it might require them to travel a bit, and to live in another city or state for the summer, which, as explained before, also serves as a great experience. The student is able to live independently from home for a short few months and gain some insight into a specific part of the entertainment industry.

Obviously, a lot goes into making a music festival what it is, so the intern could have a number of responsibilities, depending on how big the festival is. They might be dealing with backstage matters, they might be assigned to work in food management, which might not be ideal, but they are still getting firsthand experience.

They could also be doing work pre-festival, like branding and advertising for the festival and its artists, again, depending on how big or popular of a festival it is.

All of these responsibilities, ranging from marketing experience, to hands-on experience at the concert venues, to being in sales can only pad a resume. Even if the student isn’t doing exactly what they’d hoped, or exactly what coincides with their major, experience is experience, and it should be appreciated.
